The Secretary of State for Education makes the following Order in exercise of the powers conferred by section 214(2)(c) and (3) of the Education Reform Act 1988(1)

Citation, commencement and application

1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Education (Recognised Awards) (Richmond The American International University in London) Order 2017 and comes into force on 31st December 2017.

(2) This Order applies in relation to England(2).

Designation of Awards

2.  Any award granted or to be granted before 31st December 2018 by Richmond The American International University in London is designated as a recognised award for the purposes of section 214 of the Education Reform Act 1988.

Revocation

3.  The Education (Recognised Awards) (Richmond The American International University in London) Order 2016(3) is revoked.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order designates all awards granted by, or to be granted by, Richmond The American International University in London before 31st December 2018 as recognised awards for the purposes of section 214 of the Education Reform Act 1988.

As recognised awards, awards granted by Richmond The American International University in London are not subject to section 214(1) of the 1988 Act, which makes it as offence to grant, offer to grant or issue any invitations relating to certain unrecognised degrees or awards.

The Education (Recognised Awards) (Richmond The American International University in London) Order 2016, which is superseded by this Order, is revoked.

An impact assessment has not been produced for this Order because it has no impact on businesses, civil society organisations or the public sector.

1988 c. 40. Section 214(2)(c) is prospectively amended by section 53(1) of the Higher Education and Research Act 2017 (2017 c. 29), which is not yet in force. Other amendments were made to s214(2) of the Education Reform Act 1988, the subject matter of which are not relevant to this Order.

By virtue of the National Assembly of Wales (Transfer of Functions) Order S.I. 1999/672) and the Scotland Act 1998 (Consequential Modifications) (No 2) Order (S.I. 1999/1820) the powers conferred by sections 214(2)(c) and (3) of the Education Reform Act 1988 are exercisable by the Secretary of State only in relation to England.
