5. The restriction in regulation 4 does not apply—
(a)to any person using the specified off-side lanes in accordance with any —
(i)direction given by a constable in uniform or traffic officer in uniform; or
(ii)traffic sign(1);
(b)where it is necessary for a person to use the specified off-side lanes in order to avoid or prevent an accident;
(c)to any vehicle being used by—
(i)a constable in uniform;
(ii)a traffic officer in uniform;
(iii)a member of an ambulance service; or
(iv)an employee of a fire and rescue authority;
where such vehicle is used in the exercise of their duties; or
(d)where it is necessary for a person to use the specified off-side lanes to carry out in an efficient manner—
(i)the maintenance, repair, cleaning, clearance, alteration or improvement of the southbound carriageway of the A1(M) in the vicinity of the specified off-side lanes;
(ii)the removal of any vehicle from the southbound carriageway of the A1(M) in the vicinity of the specified off-side lanes; or
(iii)the erection, laying, placing, maintenance, testing, alteration, repair or removal of any structure, works or apparatus in, on, under or over any part of the southbound carriageway of the A1(M) in the vicinity of the specified off-side lanes .
