(This note is not part of the Order)
This Order, which is made under the Dentists Act 1984 (“the Act”), approves Rules made by the General Dental Council which amend the General Dental Council (Election of Members) Rules 2002 (“the principal Rules”). The principal Rules describe an election scheme for the election of members to the General Dental Council. Amendments are made in relation to the elected non-dentist members of that Council, following amendments to the Act made by the Dentists Act 1984 (Amendment) Order 2005 (S.I. 2005/2011), which provided for the establishment of a dental care professionals register in place of the previous rolls of dental auxiliaries. In particular, rule 4A of the principal Rules provides that at least one dental care professional member of the General Dental Council must be elected from each of the three categories of dental care professional specified in that rule. Amendments are also made in relation to by-elections.
