1. This Order may be cited as the A696/A68 Trunk Road (Prestwick Road End to Carter Bar) (Detrunking) Order 2004 and shall come into force on 30th September 2004.
2. In this Order—
(i)“principal road” as a classification for a highway, means that the highway is a principal road for the purposes of enactments and instruments which refer to highways classified as principal roads and is also classified for the purpose of every other enactment and instrument which refers to highways classified by the Secretary of State; and
(ii)“the trunk road” means the Trunk Road (A696/A68).
3. The length of the trunk road described in the Schedule to this Order shall cease to be a trunk road and shall be classified as a principal road from the date on which the Order comes into force.

The length of trunk road ceasing to be a trunk road are situated:—
(a)from the northern exit of Prestwick Road End roundabout (marked `A' on the plan) to the junction with A68 Trunk Road at Elishaw (marked `B' on the plan) and measuring approximately 42.98km in length; and
(b)from the junction with the A68 at Elishaw (marked `B' on the plan) to the Scottish border at Carter Bar (marked `C' on the plan) measuring approximately 20.64km in length;
and is shown by broad black dashes on the plan numbered HA 10/PS/328, marked “The A696/A68 Trunk Road (Prestwick Road End to Carter Bar) (Detrunking) Order 2004” signed by authority of the Secretary of State for Transport, ODPM-DfT Records Management Branch, Floor 13 (IMD), Ashdown House, St Leonards on Sea, Hastings, East Sussex TN37 7GA.
