The Education (Extension of Careers Education) (England) Regulations 2003

The Secretary of State for Education and Skills, in exercise of the powers conferred on the Secretary of State by sections 46(1) and 54(3) and (4) of the Education Act 1997(1), hereby makes the following Regulations:

Citation, commencement and application

1.—(1) These Regulations may be cited as the Education (Extension of Careers Education) (England) Regulations 2003 and shall come into force on 1st September 2004.

(2) These Regulations apply only to England.

Extension of the Provisions of section 43(5) of the Education Act 1997

2.  Section 43 of the Education Act 1997 shall have effect as if there were substituted for the period specified in section 43(5) as the relevant phase of a pupil’s education the period—

(a)beginning at the same time as the school year in which the majority of pupils in his class attain the age of 12; and

(b)ending with the expiry of the school year in which the majority of pupils in his class attain the age of 16.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations made under section 46 of the Education Act 1997 and which apply only to England extend the relevant phase of a pupil’s education during which he must be provided with a programme of careers education under section 43 of the Act. The Regulations extend the requirements of section 43 which previously applied only to pupils in school years 9-11 (14 to 16 year olds) to pupils in school years 7 and 8 (12 and 13 year olds).
