In exercise of the powers conferred on the Secretary of State by sections 50 and 63(3) of the Education (No. 2) Act 1986(1), the Secretary of State for Education and Employment hereby makes the following Regulations:
1. These Regulations may be cited as the Education (Bursaries for School Teacher Training Pilot Scheme) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2001 and shall come into force on 30th March 2001.
2. The Education (Bursaries for School Teacher Training Pilot Scheme) (England) Regulations 2000(2) shall be amended in accordance with the following provisions of these Regulations.
3. In regulation 2 after the definition of “non-maintained special school” there shall be inserted the following definition—
““qualified teacher” has the meaning given to that expression by section 218(2) of the Education Reform Act 1988(3).”.
4. In regulation 6(1) for the words “31st March 2001” there shall be substituted the words “31st August 2001”.

These Regulations, which come into force on 30th March 2001, amend the Education (Bursaries for School Teacher Training Pilot Scheme) (England) Regulations 2000. They insert a definition of “qualified teacher” in regulation 2 and substitute in regulation 6(1) the date of 31st August 2001 for the date of 31st March 2001. The effect of the substitution is to extend the period of eligibility for bursaries under the Regulations for the teachers mentioned in regulation 6(1).
1986 c. 61; section 50 was amended by section 278(6) of, and paragraph 102 of Schedule 19 to, the Education Act 1993 (c. 35) (which continue in force by virtue of paragraph 65 of Schedule 37 to the Education Act 1996 (c. 56)) and section 13 of the Education Act 1994 (c. 30), and section 63(3) was amended by paragraph 107(a) of Schedule 19 to the Education Act 1993. The Secretary of State can exercise the power under section 50 only in relation to England: see article 2 of and Schedule 1 to the National Assembly for Wales (Transfer of Functions) Order 1999 (S.I. 1999/672).
