The Secretary of State for Education and Skills, in exercise of the powers conferred on the Secretary of State by sections 22(1) and (2), 42(6) and 43(1) of the Teaching and Higher Education Act 1998(1), hereby makes the following Regulations:
1. These Regulations may be cited as the Education (Grants for Disabled Postgraduate Students) (Amendment) Regulations 2001 and shall come into force on 20th July 2001.
2. The Education (Grants for Disabled Postgraduate Students) Regulations 2000(2) shall be amended as follows.
3. In regulation 4(1)(a) delete the words “providing education the standard of which is higher than that of a first degree course and”.
4. In regulation 9(2) substitute for the amount “£5,000” the amount “£5,120”.
5. These Regulations shall not have effect in relation to an academic year (as defined in regulation 2(6) of the Education (Grants for Disabled Postgraduate Students) Regulations 2000) which begins before 1st September 2001.

These Regulations, which come into force on 20th July 2001, further amend the Education (Grants for Disabled Postgraduate Students) Regulations 2000 (“the principal Regulations”). Regulation 4(1)(a) of the principal Regulations is amended so that a course need not be of a standard higher than that of a first degree in order to be designated by the principal Regulations (regulation 3). Regulation 9(2) of the principal Regulations is amended to increase the maximum amount of grant payable from £5,000 to £5,120 (regulation 4). These amendments to the principal Regulations shall not apply in respect of an academic year beginning before 1st September 2001 (regulation 5).
