The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, being a Minister designated(1) for the purposes of section 2(2) of the European Communities Act 1972(2) in relation to the common agricultural policy of the European Community, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by the said section 2(2), hereby makes the following Regulations:

Title, extent and commencement

1.  These Regulations extend to England only, may be cited as the Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or Killing) (Amendment) (England) Regulations 2000 and shall come into force on 30th January 2001.

Amendment of the Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or Killing) Regulations 1995

2.  In Schedule 11, paragraph 3, to the Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or Killing) Regulations 1995(3), for sub-paragraph (2)(c) there shall be substituted the following:

(c)a maximum of 30% carbon dioxide by volume and a minimum of 60% argon (or other inert gas) by volume in atmospheric air, with no more than 2% residual oxygen..

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

1.  These Regulations amend the Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or Killing) Regulations 1995 (the 1995 Regulations).

2.  They substitute a new paragraph 3(2)(c) of Schedule 11 to the 1995 Regulations, so as to permit a new gas mixture for killing surplus chicks.

3.  No Regulatory Impact Assessment has been conducted in relation to these Regulations.
