The Osteopaths Act 1993 (Commencement No. 5) Order 2000

The Secretary of State for Health, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by section 42(2) and (4) of the Osteopaths Act 1993(1), hereby makes the following Order:—

Citation and interpretation

1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Osteopaths Act 1993 (Commencement No. 5) Order 2000.

(2) In this Order, “the Act” means the Osteopaths Act 1993.

Appointed Day

2.  8th March 2000 is the day appointed for the coming into force of the whole of the Act so far as it is not already in force, except—

(a)section 1(4) (which introduces Part I of the Schedule) so far as it relates to the paragraphs in the Schedule to the Act referred to in paragraph (d) of this article;

(b)section 7(3) (which provides that an osteopath whose registration has been suspended ceases to be a registered osteopath for the purposes of section 32(1));

(c)section 32(1) (which provides that a person who describes himself in certain ways is guilty of an offence unless he is a registered osteopath) and section 32(3) so far as it relates to section 32(1); and

(d)in the Schedule (the General Council and its Committees), paragraphs 3, 9, 10, 12, 14(1), 14(3)(d), 14(4) and 14(5)(a).

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order brings into force on 8th March 2000 the remaining provisions (with certain exceptions) of the Osteopaths Act 1993 (“the Act”).

The provisions not being commenced by the Order relate to offences committed by persons describing themselves as osteopaths or in similar ways without being registered with the General Osteopathic Council (“the GOsC”), and provisions relating to the election and appointment of the Chairman and members of the GOsC after the end of the relevant transitional periods defined in the Act.
