In exercise of the powers conferred by sections 484 and 569(4) of the Education Act 1996(1), the Secretary of State for Education and Employment hereby makes the following Regulations:

1.  These Regulations may be cited as the Education (Grants for Education Support and Training) (England) Regulations 1998 (Amendment) Regulations 1999 and shall come into force on 25th February 1999.

2.  The Education (Grants for Education Support and Training) (England) Regulations 1998(2) shall be amended as follows.

3.  In regulation 2–(1) the following definition shall be inserted at the appropriate place–

“leading mathematics teacher” means an experienced mathematics teacher who is required to provide demonstration mathematics lessons;.

4.  In regulation 5(2) the following entries shall be inserted at the end of the table in the left hand and right hand columns respectively–

36100.

5.  In regulation 11(1) for “or 31” there shall be substituted “, 31 or 35”.

6.  In the Schedule after paragraph 33 there shall be inserted the following paragraphs–

34.  Support for the training of numeracy consultants and leading mathematics teachers in maintained schools, including the provision of additional staff to assist such schools for the period during which teachers are attending training courses and the payment of fees to consultants who are not teachers in respect of their attendance at training courses.

35.  Support for the setting up and running of out of school hours literacy and numeracy classes for pupils in maintained schools who will be completing key stage 2 in the summer of 1999.

36.  The provision of portable CD Rom systems to education authorities to aid school management and curriculum support for pupils with special educational needs.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations further amend the Education (Grants for Education Support and Training) (England) Regulations 1998. They add three new purposes for or in connection with which grants are payable. The new purposes relate to training for numeracy consultants and leading mathematics teachers, out of school hours literacy and numeracy classes for pupils in the final year of key stage 2 and the provision of portable CD Rom systems to education authorities to aid school management and curriculum support for pupils with special educational needs.
