The Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions as respects England, and the Secretary of State for Wales as respects Wales, in exercise of the powers conferred on them by sections 175(1A) and 270(1) of the Local Government Act 1972(1), and of all other powers enabling them in that behalf, hereby make the following Regulations:

Citation, commencement and interpretation

1.  These Regulations may be cited as the Local Authorities (Members' Allowances) (Amendment) Regulations 1998 and shall come into force on 1st April 1998.

Increase of allowance

2.—(1) The Local Authorities (Members' Allowances) Regulations 1991(2) are amended as follows.

(2) In regulation 17(2) (allowance in respect of conferences and meetings) for “£27.70” there is substituted, in relation to attendance at a conference or meeting on or after 1st April 1998, “£28.62”.

Revocations

3.  The Regulations specified in the first column of the following table are revoked to the extent specified in the third column.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations further amend the Local Authorities (Members' Allowances) Regulations 1991.

Regulation 2 increases, by 3.2 per cent., the maxima which may be paid to parish and community councillors and to non-elected members of local authorities by way of allowances under section 175(1A) (allowances in respect of attendance at conferences and meetings) of the Local Government Act 1972.
