The Local Authorities (Armorial Bearings) Order 1997

The Queen’s Most Excellent Majesty in Council

Her Majesty, by virtue and in exercise of the powers conferred on Her by section 247 of the Local Government Act 1972(1), is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to order, and it is hereby ordered, as follows:

1.  This Order may be cited as the Local Authorities (Armorial Bearings) Order 1997 and shall come into force on 9th April 1997.

2.  The armorial bearings which, immediately before 1st April 1996 were lawfully borne and used by the City Council of York, may be borne and used by York City Council, provided they have first been exemplified according to the laws of arms and recorded in the College of Arms.

3.  The armorial bearings which, immediately before 1st April 1974, were lawfully borne and used by the Corporation of the City of Worcester, may be borne and used by Worcester City Council, provided they have first been exemplified according to the laws of arms and recorded in the College of Arms.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order authorises York City Council and Worcester City Council to bear and use the armorial bearings formerly borne and used by the City Council of York and the Corporation of the City of Worcester respectively.

1972 c. 70: Section 247 of the 1972 Act was applied in relation to new and abolished authorities as it applies to the new and existing local authorities mentioned in that section but as if the reference to April 1, 1974 were a reference to the reorganisation date by regulation 7 of The Local Government Changes for England (Miscellaneous Provision) Regulations 1996 (S.I. 1996/330).
