Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations amend the Education (Pupil Registration) Regulations 1995.

Regulation 3 provides that when a pupil is attending an approved educational activity outside the school premises the school’s attendance register must be marked accordingly. The nature of that activity must also be recorded. It also provides that the taking of the attendance register in the afternoon can be done at any time during the afternoon session.

Regulation 4 removes work experience in the last year of compulsory schooling (as permitted by section 560 of the Education Act 1996) from the categories of employment requiring leave of absence. Work experience is now an approved educational activity in accordance with Regulation 3.

Regulation 5 provides that the name of pupil may be deleted from the admission register where that pupil has been continuously absent for four weeks and is detained under a final court order or an order of recall.

Regulation 6 allows the children of traveller families to be registered both at a base school which they normally attend and at another school for the time being.
