This Order revokes and replaces the EEC Nursing and Midwifery Qualifications Designation Order 1983 as amended. In accordance with Directives 77/452/EEC (Articles 2, 3, 4 and 4a), 80/154/EEC (Articles 2, 3, 4 and 5) and 89/594/EEC (Articles 11, 12, 22 and 23), it designates nursing and midwifery qualifications awarded in other EU States as having Community equivalence for the purposes of registration in the professional register. By virtue of the Agreement on the European Economic Area (HMSO Cm 2073 and O.J. No. L1, 3.1.1994, p. 3) the provisions of these Directives apply to qualifications awarded in Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein which are also designated.
Articles 7 and 8 make provision for the recognition of qualifications arising out of training received in the former German Democratic Republic (Articles 3 and 6 of Directive 90/658/EEC).
Article 9 contains transitional provisions in relation to midwifery qualifications obtained in Spain following training which began before 1st January 1986 (Article 24 of Directive 89/594/EEC).
