This Order brings into force certain provisions of the Medical (Professional Performance) Act 1995, which amends the Medical Act 1983.
Certain provisions are brought into force on 1st September 1996, first so as to provide that rules made by the GMC shall not come into force until they have been approved by the Privy Council, and secondly for the limited purpose of enabling the GMC to determine, in accordance with rules, who will be the members of its statutory committees from 1st January 1997.
The provisions brought into force on 1st January 1997 provide for the establishment, in accordance with rules, of two new Committees of the GMC, namely the Assessment Referral Committee and the Committee on Professional Performance.
