Coming into force

Having made, pursuant to section 242(1) of the Education Act 19931, such arrangements for consultation about her proposals as she considered appropriate, the Secretary of State for Education, in exercise of the powers conferred by sections 4(2)(a) and (b) and (4) and 232(5) and (6) of the Education Reform Act 19882, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation, commencement and interpretation1

This Order may be cited as the Education (National Curriculum) (Attainment Targets and Programmes of Study in Geography) (England) Order 1995 and shall come into force on 1st August 1995.

In this Order “the Document” means the Document published by Her Majesty’s Stationery Office in January 1995 entitled “Geography in the National Curriculum (England)”3.

This Order applies to pupils at maintained schools and grant-maintained special schools (other than those established in a hospital) in England only.

Revocation2

The Education (National Curriculum) (Attainment Targets and Programmes of Study in Geography) (England) (No. 2) Order 19914 is revoked.

Specification of attainment targets and programmes of study

It is hereby directed that the provisions relating to attainment targets and programmes of study set out in the Document shall have effect for the purposes of specifying attainment targets and programmes of study in relation to geography.

The examples printed in italics in the Document (which serve to illustrate the programmes of study described therein) do not form part of the provision made by this Order.

This Order provides for the attainment targets and programmes of study specified in relation to key stages 1 to 3 of a pupil’s compulsory schooling in the document published by Her Majesty’s Stationery Office in January 1995 entitled “Geography in the National Curriculum (England)” (ISBN 0 11 270886 2) to have effect for the purpose of specifying those elements of the National Curriculum for geography. These provisions apply to pupils at maintained schools and grant-maintained special schools (but not if established in hospitals) in England only, with effect from 1st August 1995.

The Order supersedes the provisions of the Education (National Curriculum) (Attainment Targets and Programmes of Study in Geography) (England) (No. 2) Order 1991.
