Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

Section 21 of the Crown Lands Act 1851 confers certain functions on the Secretary of State which were once discharged by the Surveyor General of Her Majesty’s Works and Public Buildings (those functions include the maintenance and upkeep of the Royal Palaces including the Palace of Westminster). Section 7(5) of the Parliamentary Corporate Bodies Act 1992 provides that section 21 of the 1851 Act will from a day appointed by the Secretary of State cease to have effect in relation to the Palace of Westminster. This Order appoints 1st April 1992 for that purpose.
