Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

1.   These Regulations further amend the Motor Vehicles (Type Approval) Regulations 1980 so that

(a)the type approval requirements relating to the installation of lighting and light signalling devices on motor vehicles and their trailers are, as an alternative to the existing requirements, the requirements of Council Directive 76/756/EEC as amended by Commission Directives 80/233/EEC and 82/244/EEC, Council Directive 83/276/EEC, and Commission Directives 84/8/EEC as corrected and 89/278/EEC, as corrected;

(b)the type approval requirements, relating to direction indicator lamps for motor vehicles and their trailers are, as an alternative to the existing requirements, the requirements of Council Directive 76/759/EEC as amended by Commission Directive 89/277/EEC, as corrected; and

(c)the type approval requirements relating to the lateral protection (side guards) of certain motor vehicles and their trailers are the requirements of Council Directive 89/297/EEC.

2.   Copies of the Council Directives and Commission Directives referred to in these Regulations may be obtained from Her Majesty’s Stationery Office.
