Explanatory Note

Section 173 of the Water Act 1989 enables the Secretary of State, with the consent of the Treasury, to make payments into funds maintained for the purposes of regulations made under section 7 of the Superannuation Act 1972 in respect of certain liabilities falling from time to time to be met out of those funds. Those payments may relate to liabilities to or in respect of former officers or employees of persons designated by the Secretary of State whose activities before 1st September 1989 consisted in, or were connected with, the carrying out of functions which were transferred by the Water Act 1989 or functions similar to those functions or to other functions under that Act.

This Order designates, for the purpose of making those payments, the following bodies–

(a)British Water International Limited;

(b)Foundation for Water Research;

(c)International Association on Water Pollution Research and Control;

(d)International Water Supply Association;

(e)The Water Authorities Association;

(f)Water Research Centre (1989) plc; and

(g)Water Training.
