PART IGENERAL

Citation and Entry into Force

1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (Immunities and Privileges) Order 1988.

(2) This Order shall come into operation on the date when the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment(1) enters into force with respect to the United Kingdom. That date shall be notified in the London, Edinburgh and Belfast Gazettes.

Interpretation

2.  In this Order —

“the Committee” means the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, established in accordance with Article 1 of the Convention;

“the Convention” means the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, done at Strasbourg on the 26th day of November 1987;

“the members of the Committee” means the members referred to in Article 4 of the Convention and includes any experts chosen by the Committee to assist it in its functions in accordance with Article 7(2) of the Convention;

“United Kingdom national” means a person who is a British citizen, a British Dependent Territories citizen, a British Overseas Citizen or a British National (Overseas).
