Coinage (Measurement) Act 2011

An Act to make provision about the arrangements for measuring the standard weight of coins.

Be it enacted by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—

1Amendment of Coinage Act 1971

(1)In section 1(6) of the Coinage Act 1971 (measurement of variation from standard weight)—

(a)omit “(other than a gold coin of a denomination mentioned in Schedule 1 to this Act)”, and

(b)for “shall be measured as the average of a sample of not more than one kilogram of that coin” substitute “shall be measured in accordance with provision made by proclamation under section 3”.

(2)In section 3(1)(cd) of that Act (power to regulate coinage by proclamation) for “specified in Schedule 1 to this Act for a gold coin of a denomination mentioned in that Schedule” substitute “for coins”.

2Extent, commencement and short title

(1)This Act extends to England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

(2)This Act comes into force at the end of the period of 2 months beginning with the day on which it is passed.

(3)This Act may be cited as the Coinage (Measurement) Act 2011.
