European Communities (Amendment) Act 1998

1998 CHAPTER 21

An Act to make provision consequential on the Treaty signed at Amsterdam on 2nd October 1997 amending the Treaty on European Union, the Treaties establishing the European Communities and certain related Acts.

Be it enacted by the Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—

1Meaning of “the Treaties” and “the Community Treaties”

In section 1(2) of the [1972 c. 68.] European Communities Act 1972, in the definition of “the Treaties” and “the Community Treaties”, after paragraph (n) (inserted by the [1994 c. 38.] European Union (Accessions) Act 1994) there shall be inserted and

(o)the following provisions of the Treaty signed at Amsterdam on 2nd October 1997 amending the Treaty on European Union, the Treaties establishing the European Communities and certain related Acts—

(i)Articles 2 to 9,

(ii)Article 12, and

(iii)the other provisions of the Treaty so far as they relate to those Articles,

and the Protocols adopted on that occasion other than the Protocol on Article J.7 of the Treaty on European Union.

2European Parliament

For the purpose of section 6 of the [1978 c. 10.] European Parliamentary Elections Act 1978 (approval of treaties increasing the Parliament’s powers) the Treaty signed at Amsterdam on 2nd October 1997 amending the Treaty on European Union, the Treaties establishing the European Communities and certain related Acts is approved.

3Short title

This Act may be cited as the European Communities (Amendment) Act 1998.
