Local Government Act 1966

1966 CHAPTER 42

An Act to make further provision, in relation to England and Wales, with respect to the payment of grants to local authorities, rating and valuation, the classification and lighting of highways and the powers of local authorities to place staff and facilities at the disposal of Ministers concerned with highways and to make payments offsetting the effect of the selective employment tax; to repeal or amend certain enactments relating to local licences and registrations; and for purposes connected with the matters aforesaid.

[F7 11 Grants for certain expenditure due to ethnic minority population. E+W

(1) Subject to the provisions of this section the Secretary of State may pay, to local authorities who in his opinion are required to make special provision in the exercise of any of their functions in consequence of the presence within their areas of persons belonging to ethnic minorities whose language or customs differ from those of the rest of the community, grants of such amounts as he may with the consent of the Treasury determine on account of expenditure of such description (being expenditure in respect of the employment of staff) as he may so determine.

(2) This section shall apply to [F8 the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority][F9 a police authority established under [F10 section 3 of the Police Act 1996][F11 , the Metropolitan Police Authority]and] a joint authority established by Part IV of the Local Government Act 1985 as it applies to a local authority.]

There shall be defrayed out of moneys provided by Parliament—

(a) any sums required for the payment of grants under this Act or of other expenses of a Minister under this Act; and

(b) any increase attributable to the provisions of this Act in the sums payable out of such moneys under any other Act.
