The Scottish Ministers, in exercise of the powers conferred upon themby section 6 of the Erskine Bridge Tolls Act 1968(1) and of allother powers enabling them in that behalf and having given not less thanfourteen days public notice in accordance with section 6(3) of that Act,hereby make the following Order:

Citation, commencement and interpretation

1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Erskine Bridge (Temporary Suspension ofTolls) Order 1999 and shall come into force on 16th October 1999.

(2) In this Order, “the Principal Order” means the Erskine BridgeTolls Order 1992(2).

Provision

2.  The tolls leviable in accordance with the Principal Order shall besuspended, during the period beginning on 16th October 1999 and ending on15th April 2001, at any time, between 1800 hours on a Saturday and 0700hours on the next following Monday–

(a)where the use by any person of a vehicle on all of the lengths of roadspecified in the Schedule to this Order is prohibited for a period of nofewer than 12 hours by virtue of an Order made under section 14(1)(a) ofthe Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984(3); and

(b)within one hour before, or one hour after, any such period of suchprohibition.

Article 2

SCHEDULE

1.  That length of the M8 Motorway westbound carriageway from its junctionwith the westbound off slip road to Newton Street at Junction 19(Anderston) to its junction with the westbound on slip road from the M8Secondary Carriageway at Junction 22 (Plantation), a distance of 3.1kilometres or thereby.

2.  That length of the M8 Motorway being the westbound on slip road fromNewton Street from its junction with Newton Street at Junction 19(Anderston) to its junction with the westbound carriageway of the M8 atJunction 19 (Anderston), a distance of 220 metres or thereby.

3.  That length of the M8 Motorway being the westbound Stobcross on sliproad from its junction with the A814 Clydeside Expressway at Junction 19(Anderston) to its junction with the westbound carriageway of the M8 atJunction 19 (Anderston), a distance of 660 metres or thereby.

4.  That length of the M8 Motorway being the westbound on slip road fromWaterloo Street from its junction with Waterloo Street at Junction 19(Anderston) to its junction with the westbound carriageway of the M8 atJunction 19 (Anderston), a distance of 380 metres or thereby.

5.  That length of the M8 Motorway being the westbound on slip road fromPhoenix Road/Great Western Road from its junction with the link road fromPhoenix Road to Charing Cross at Junction 17 (West Graham Street) to itsjunction with the M8 westbound carriageway at Junction 17 (West GrahamStreet), a distance of 150 metres or thereby.

6.  That length of the M8 Motorway eastbound carriageway from its junctionwith the eastbound off slip road to the M8 eastbound Secondary Carriagewayto its junction with the eastbound on slip road from North Street atJunction 19 (Anderston), a distance of 3.1 kilometres or thereby.

7.  That length of the M8 Motorway being the eastbound on slip road fromthe B768 Dumbreck Road from its junction with the B768 Dumbreck Road atJunction 23 (Dumbreck) to its junction with the eastbound carriageway ofthe M8 at Junction 23 (Dumbreck), a distance of 320 metres or thereby.

8.  That length of the M8 Motorway being the eastbound on slip road fromWest Street from its junction with West Street at Junction 20 (West Street)to its junction with the eastbound carriageway of the M8 at Junction 20(West Street), a distance of 560 metres or thereby.

9.  That length of the M8 Motorway being the eastbound on slip road fromthe M77 from its junction with the eastbound on slip road to the M8Secondary Carriageway at Junction 22 (Plantation) to its junction with theM8 eastbound main carriageway at Junction 22 (Plantation), a distance of420 metres or thereby.

10.  That length of the M8 Motorway being the eastbound on slip road fromHelen Street, from its junction with Helen Street at Junction 24 (HelenStreet) to its junction with the eastbound carriageway of the M8 atJunction 24 (Helen Street), a distance of 300 metres or thereby.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

Due to the need to carry out essential repairs at the Kingston Bridge,a series of closures of that bridge are necessary.

In consequence of those closures and in order to alleviate trafficcongestion, tolls on the Erskine Bridge are to be suspended during therelevant closure periods when the Kingston Bridge is closed to traffic inboth directions for a period of 12 hours or more. The suspension is tocommence one hour before and after such closures and will apply only duringthe times stipulated in article 2. This Order gives effect to thatsuspension of tolls
