This Order provides for the coming into operation of section 32 of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 which empowers the Department of the Environment to make taxi accessibility Regulations to ensure that disabled persons can get into and out of regulated taxis safely and be carried in safety and reasonable comfort and, in the case of disabled persons in wheelchairs to do so while remaining in their wheelchairs.
Under section 32 the driver of a regulated taxi is guilty of an offence if he fails to comply with any requirement imposed upon him by the taxi accessibility Regulations or if the regulated taxi fails to conform with any provision of the taxi accessibility Regulations with which it is required to conform.
