The Traffic Signs (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2007

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations further amend the Traffic Signs Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1997.

The principal amendments are to—

(a)substitute new diagrams, and the words and tables immediately below them, for the signs shown in diagrams 639.1A, 660.6 and 660.7 (regulation 2(3)(a) and (f) and (7)(b), (c) and (d));

(b)prescribe new permitted variants for the signs shown in diagrams 563, 660, 660.3, 660.4, 660.5, 661A, 661.1, 661.2, 661.3, 661.4, 662, 663 and 663.1 (regulation 2(2) and (3)(b) to (e), (g) to (i) and (k) to (n)); and

(c)prescribe four new signs shown in diagrams 670.3 (for use in indicating that the maximum speed limit is in miles per hour), 879.1 (for use in indicating an “average speed” enforcement area), 880 (for use in reminding drivers of the maximum speed limit and that speed cameras are in place) and 7001.3 (to advise vehicular traffic that it should proceed slowly owing to workforce in road ahead) (regulations 2(3)(o), (4)(d), (6), (7)(a) and (8)).

These Regulations have been notified to the European Commission pursuant to Directive 98/34/EC of 22nd June 1998 laying down a procedure for the provision of information in the field of technical standards and regulations and of rules on Information Society Services (O.J. No. L204, 21.07.98, p. 37-48) as amended by Directive 98/48/EC of 20th July 1998 (O.J. No. L217, 05.08.98, p. 18-26).
