ROADS

M2 Improvements (Sandyknowes to Greencastle) Order (Northern Ireland) 2005

Coming into operation

11th July 2005

WHEREAS the Department for Regional Development(1) in accordance with Article 15(1) of the Roads (Northern Ireland) Order 1993(2) has constructed or proposes to construct the roads described in Part I of the Schedule and the bridge described in Part II of the Schedule and considers it expedient to designate them as special roads;

AND WHEREAS the Department in accordance with Article 15(2) of that Order, in respect of the roads described in Part I of the Schedule, is satisfied that adequate alternative facilities for traffic, other than traffic authorised to use those roads on their being opened for use as special roads, are available or will be made available before the date on which those roads are opened for use as special roads;

AND WHEREAS the Department in accordance with Article 14(1) of that Order considers it expedient for the purpose of improving the trunk system that the roads described in Part I of the Schedule and the bridge described in Part II of the Schedule should be designated as trunk roads;

AND WHEREAS notice has been published and served in compliance with paragraphs 1 and 2 of Schedule 8 to that Order;

AND WHEREAS one objection was received and duly considered;

NOW THEREFORE the Department, in exercise of the powers conferred by Articles 14(1), 15(1), and 16(1) and (2) of the Roads (Northern Ireland) Order 1993 and now exercisable by it(3) and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby orders and directs as follows:

Citation, commencement and interpretation

1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the M2 Improvements (Sandyknowes to Greencastle) Order (Northern Ireland) 2005 and shall come into operation on 11th July 2005.

(2) In this Order “the map” means the drawing numbered S100297/2/SK/006B marked “M2 Improvements (Sandyknowes to Greencastle) Order (Northern Ireland) 2005” copies of which have been deposited at the Department’s Roads Service offices, Headquarters, Room 2-01, Clarence Court, 10-18 Adelaide Street, Belfast BT2 8GB and Eastern Division, Hydebank, 4 Hospital Road, Belfast BT8 8JL.

Designation of special roads

2.  The roads described in Part I of the Schedule and the bridge described in Part II of the Schedule shall become special roads.

Direction as to trunk roads

3.  The roads described in Part I of the Schedule and the bridge described in Part II of the Schedule shall become trunk roads and be part of the Belfast-Antrim-Coleraine-Londonderry Trunk Road T7.

Classification of traffic

4.  The roads described in Part I of the Schedule and the bridge described in Part II of the Schedule shall be used only by traffic of Classes I and II as set out in Schedule I to the Roads (Northern Ireland) Order 1993.

SCHEDULE

PART ITHE NEW ROADS TO BE CONSTRUCTED AS SPECIAL AND TRUNK ROADS AND PART OF THE M2 MOTORWAY AND TRUNK ROAD T7

1.  4300 metres of a section of carriageway adjacent to the Belfast bound carriageway, from a point 570 metres south-east of the centre point of the bridge which carries the M2 Motorway over Sandyknowes Junction (No. 4), to a point on the M2 Motorway 4870 metres south-east of that bridge, more particularly delineated, coloured pink and marked C1 on the map.

2.  40 metres of a section of carriageway adjacent to the country bound carriageway, from a point 15 metres south-east of the centre point of Hightown Bridge on the M2 Motorway to a point 25 metres north-west of the centre point, more particularly delineated, coloured pink and marked C2 on the map.

3.  55 metres of a section of carriageway adjacent to the country bound carriageway, from a point 30 metres south-east of the centre point of Collin Bridge on the M2 Motorway to a point 25 metres north-west of the centre point, more particularly delineated, coloured pink and marked C3 on the map.

4.  55 metres of a section of carriageway adjacent to the country bound carriageway, from a point 25 metres south-east of the centre point of Longlands Bridge on the M2 Motorway to a point 30 metres north-west of the centre point, more particularly delineated, coloured pink and marked C4 on the map.

5.  800 metres of a section of carriageway adjacent to the country bound carriageway, from the centre point of Greencastle Bridge C on the M2 Motorway to a point on the M2 Motorway 800 metres north-west of that bridge, more particularly delineated, coloured pink and marked C5 on the map.

6.  100 metres of a section of carriageway adjacent to the Belfast bound carriageway, from a point 140 metres north-west of the centre point of Shore Road Bridge South on the M2 Motorway to a point 90 metres north-west of that point and from a point 140 metres south-east of the centre point of Shore Road Bridge South to a point 90 metres south-east of that point, more particularly delineated, coloured pink and marked C6 on the map.

PART IITHE NEW BRIDGE TO BE CONSTRUCTED AS SPECIAL ROAD AND PART OF THE M2 MOTORWAY AND TRUNK ROAD T7

20 metres of new bridge extending in a north-westerly direction for 20 metres from the centre point of the existing Greencastle Bridge C, more particularly delineated, coloured blue and marked B1 on the map.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order provides that 5350 metres of new carriageway described in Part I of the Schedule and 20 metres of new bridge described in Part II of the Schedule shall be special road subject to motorway traffic restrictions and be part of the M2 Motorway and Belfast-Antrim-Coleraine-Londonderry Trunk Road T7.

The replacement of Hightown Bridge, Collin Bridge and Longlands Bridge and associated improvements to junctions and connecting roads, which are not the subject of the Order, are shown coloured blue and orange respectively on the map for the purpose of clarification.

The map referred to above means Drawing No. S100297/2/SK/006B marked “M2 Improvements (Sandyknowes to Greencastle) Order (Northern Ireland) 2005” copies of which have been deposited at the Department’s Roads Service offices, Headquarters, Room 2-01, Clarence Court, 10-18 Adelaide Street, Belfast BT2 8GB and Eastern Division, Hydebank, 4 Hospital Road, Belfast BT8 8JL.
