Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order.)

This Order revokes the Food Protection (Emergency Prohibitions) Order (Northern Ireland) 1991 (“the 1991 Order”) and the various amendments thereto. The 1991 Order contained emergency prohibitions on various activities in order to prevent human consumption of food which is derived from sheep in certain designated areas in Northern Ireland and which have been or may have been rendered unsuitable for human consumption in consequence of the elevated levels of radioactivity found in those areas following the escape of radioactive substances from a nuclear reactor situated at Chernobyl. The effect of this Order is to lift the prohibitions from the remaining designated areas of Belraugh and Glenshane in County Londonderry.
