This Order brings into operation on 19th October 2000 Articles 34 to 41 of and Schedule 1 to the Education (Northern Ireland) Order 1998 which make provision for the constitution and functions of the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland. Those provisions enable the Department, inter alia, to appoint the first registrar of the Council and to make regulations, as to the eligibility of persons for registration and the form and manner in which the register is kept. The Order also makes some consequential amendments which relate to the establishment of the Council.
