ROAD TRAFFIC AND VEHICLES

The Department of the Environment, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Articles 9(4)(b) and 218(1) of the Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1981(1) and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Regulations:
1. These Regulations may be cited as the Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000 and shall come into operation on 10th May 2000.
2. For regulation 51(8B)(b) of the Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1996(2) (circumstances in which a person suffering from diabetes requiring insulin may hold a licence) there shall be substituted—
“(b)he has not, during the period of twelve months ending on the date of the application, required the assistance of another person to treat an episode of hypoglycaemia suffered whilst he was driving;”.

These Regulations further amend the Motor Vehicles (Driving Licences) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1996 (S.R. 1996 No. 542) by altering the conditions under which a person suffering from insulin-treated diabetes may be granted a licence to drive vehicles in sub-categories C1 and C1 + E (8.25 tonnes).
