The Education (1998 Order) (Commencement No. 1) Order (Northern Ireland) 1998

The Department of Education, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Articles 1(3) and 90(3) of the Education (Northern Ireland) Order 1998(1) and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation and interpretation

1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Education (1998 Order) (Commencement No. 1) Order (Northern Ireland) 1998.

(2) In this Order “the Order” means the Education (Northern Ireland) Order 1998.

Appointed Day

2.  The day appointed for the coming into operation of Article 16 and Article 88(3) of the Order, and Schedule 4 to the Order is 31st December 1998.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order.)

This Order brings into operation on 31st December 1998 Article 16 of the Education (Northern Ireland) Order 1998, which enables the Department to make Regulations for the purpose of imposing a statutory limit on the size of any class of pupils in key stage 1 of their compulsory education.

The Order also brings into operation on that date Article 88(3) of, and Schedule 4 to, the Education (Northern Ireland) Order 1998, which make provision for safeguarding the interests of persons who enter into certified contracts.
