The Department of the Environment, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 4(8) of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Northern Ireland) Act 1992(1) and of all other powers enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:
1.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Local Government (Defined Activities) (Exemptions) Order (Northern Ireland) 1998.
(2) In this Order “the Order” means the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Northern Ireland) Order 1992.
2. An activity specified in Column 1 of the Schedule, which is carried out by a council specified in Column 2 of the Schedule under a works contract, shall not be treated as a defined activity from 31st March 1999 to 31st March 2000, where the original term of that contract shall expire on 31st March 1999.

This Order provides that the activities (specified in that Order and carried out by Ards Borough Council) shall not be treated as a defined activity for the purposes of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Northern Ireland) Order 1992 in the year beginning on 1st April 1999 and ending on 31st March 2000.
