Horse Racing (Charges on Bookmakers) Order (Northern Ireland) 1998

To be laid before Parliament under paragraph 3(3) of Schedule 1 to the Northern Ireland Act 1974

Coming into operation

1st July 1998

The Department of Agriculture(1), in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 9(1) of the Horse Racing (Northern Ireland) Order 1990(2) and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, after consultation with such organisations as appear to the Department to substantially represent the interests of bookmakers, and with the approval of the Department of Finance and Personnel, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation and commencement

1.  This Order may be cited as the Horse Racing (Charges on Bookmakers) Order (Northern Ireland) 1998 and shall come into operation on 1st July 1998.

Charges on bookmakers

2.  The charges to be paid to the Department under Article 9 of the Horse Racing (Northern Ireland) Order 1990 for the benefit of the Fund shall be—

(a)£84 in the case of every person to whom paragraph (1)(a) of that Article applies;

(b)£944 in the case of every person to whom paragraph (1)(b) of that Article applies.

Revocation

3.  The Horse Racing (Charges on Bookmakers) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997(3) is hereby revoked.

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order.)

Article 9(1) of the Horse Racing (Northern Ireland) Order 1990 provides for charges to be paid to the Department of Agriculture by persons who intend to apply for bookmakers' and bookmaking office licences.

This Order increases the charges payable—

(a)by persons, other than those mentioned in paragraph (b), who intend to apply for the grant or renewal of a bookmaker’s licence, from £82 to £84; and

(b)by persons who intend to apply for the grant or renewal of a bookmaking office licence or to have the provisional grant of a bookmaking office licence declared final, from £923 to £944.

This Order also revokes the Horse Racing (Charges on Bookmakers) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997.
