ROAD TRAFFIC AND VEHICLES

The Department of the Environment, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 1 of the Road Traffic Offenders (Northern Ireland) Order 1996(1) and paragraph 2(1) of Schedule 1 to the Northern Ireland Act 1974(2) and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:
1. This Order may be cited as the Road Traffic Offenders (1996 Order) (Commencement No. 3) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997.
2. The day appointed for the coming into operation of Articles 1 to 16(4), 17 to 22, 24 to 64, 66 to 76(3) and 77 to 97 of, and Schedules 1 to 4 to, the Road Traffic Offenders (Northern Ireland) Order 1996 shall be 1st October 1997.

This Order brings into operation on 1st October 1997 the provisions of the Road Traffic Offenders (Northern Ireland) Order 1996 (“the 1996 Order”) not yet in operation with the exception of Article 65 (Notification of court and date of trial). The 1996 Order makes provision with respect to the prosecution and punishment (including punishment without conviction) of road traffic offences in Northern Ireland.
