The Betting and Lotteries (Northern Ireland) Order 1994

Explanatory Note

(This note is not part of the Order)

This Order makes miscellaneous amendments to the law relating to betting and lotteries. The principal amendments—

(a)enable tickets or chances in a private lottery promoted by a society to be sold to non-members of the society if they are on the society’s premises;

(b)remove the prohibition on the use of premises for the collection of football pools coupons and stakes;

(c)reduce the minimum age for football pool betting from 18 to 16 years; and

(d)in relation to lotteries—

(i)increase the maximum prize in a society’s lottery;

(ii)remove the restriction on the minimum amount of the proceeds of such a lottery which must be appropriated for prizes;

(iii)amend existing controls on advertising and the donation of expenses; and

(iv)prevent multiple registration of societies.
