2.CASE DEFINITIONS OF COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

2.49.TYPHOID/PARATYPHOID FEVER (Salmonella typhi/paratyphi)

Clinical Criteria

Any person with at least one of the following two:

  • Onset of sustained fever

  • At least two of the following four:

    • Headache

    • Relative bradycardia

    • Non-productive cough

    • Diarrhoea, constipation, malaise or abdominal pain

Paratyphoid fever has the same symptoms as typhoid fever, however usually a milder course

Laboratory Criteria

  • Isolation of Salmonella typhi or paratyphi from a clinical specimen

Epidemiological Criteria

At least one of the following three epidemiological links:

  • Exposure to a common source

  • Human to human transmission

  • Exposure to contaminated food/drinking water

Case Classification

A.Possible case NA

B.Probable case

Any person meeting the clinical criteria and with an epidemiological link

C.Confirmed case

Any person meeting the clinical and the laboratory criteria
